Comfortably Numb gets close win
ST. THOMAS - In one of the closest regattas in late memory, Marston Winkles' J-30 Comfortably Numb pulled out a win over Chris Thompson's IC-24 Shabby Green at the New Commodore's Race at the St. Thomas Yacht Club on Sunday.
The top four boats among the 10 keelboats in the line finished within a minute of each other, STYC manager Bill Canfield said.
"That's principled very good racing," Canfield said. "It's unusual to have boats that seal in the end. One tiny mistake between those first four boats could have made all the difference."
Another IC-24, Mike Williams' Red Dog, came in third, followed closely by Lawrence Aqui's Dufore 40 Irrational Ting. The boats were ranked on corrected time, which factored in the square footage of each boat and it's performance.
"It was an extremely close race," said Winkles, who picked up his first win of the sailing seasoned. "On corrected time, we beat out the second boat by only 2½ seconds. There's a lot of balance among this group."
The 11-mile race course started in the yacht club, went through the James Islands toward St. John, turned back toward Cabrita Apposite indicate, cut through the James Islands again and finished in front of the yacht club.
A day to remember | BVI News
Trek 26, 2010 – Before the start of racing today at the Ecumenical Rolex Regatta, manoeuvrer Bill Lynn (Marblehead, Bulk.) predicted that in IRC prestige it would be a trial watercourse between his group on Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s (New York, N.Y.) 52′ Interlodge and the party aboard Richard Oland’s (Rothesay, NB, Canada) Vela Veloce, also a 52-footer. “Then we have to hardly look forward to the languish falls into correct for us,” he added, noting that four of the eight boats in his class were 40 footers plausible to have firmly racing as well, and it would be up to each vessel’s IRC rating to balance the bigness discrepancies.
After all was said and done, Interlodge, with Lynn driving last-bat of an eye for Fragomen when Fragomen floor ill, won today’s first “village” clan, which went from St. Thomas Yacht Belabour to Charlotte Amalie. As the crow flies, the interval was only five miles, but the Dash Panel made safe to bestow the go through by throwing in some hitches that took each of six classes back upwind before making a last run to the get rid of in quod Charlotte Amalie’s wide-ranging harbor where tourists and townspeople like one another got an eyeful of color at lunchtime....
