Beer is not a passion for me, and I'm no professional. But it increasingly is an area of curiosity.

My interest in beer was first piqued early one Saturday evening more than 30 years ago. I had played out the day laboring with Dad on a little farm he had bought a couple of counties away; I believe we were pulling out an old fence line.

To celebrate the completion of a hard day's vocation, I went to the old refrigerator in the basement and found a cold bottle of Miller Exorbitant Life, "The Champagne of Bottle Beers." For the first time in my life, a beer tasted shapely.

I drank beer for several years. But I came to like it less and less; increasingly, mainstream upright lagers — which, for the longest time, meant "beer" in this power since there weren't many choices and they all tasted about the same — seemed bland and watery.

Charlie Brown once declared that a hot dog "always tastes haler with a ballgame in front of it." I did certainly enjoy the first (and only) time I drank a beer with Dad — at a Dodgers ready in Los Angeles an eternity ago.
