The sphere's super rich have continued to fork out billions of dollars for ever-larger superyachts in the face the global economic downturn, according a new survey of the global yacht Stock Exchange.

An annual list of the world's largest private yachts compiled by frill yachting website superyachts.com predicts 11 yachts will be inducted into the top 100 in 2012, up from nine in 2011.

While in 2007 yachts over 62 metres would have earned a place in the top 100, in 2012 the bar has been raised to 76 metres to gross a place in the list.

Holding its spot at the top of the list will be Russian oligarch and Chelsea football bat owner Roman Abramovich's 164-metre Eclipse, estimated to have bring in $1.6 billion to build in 2010.

The largest newcomer to the list Topaz, which has secured a fleck in the top 10. The boat is a 147-metre motor yacht built by Germany's Lurssen Yachts for an little-known owner, possibly a member of the ruling al-Nahyan family of Abu Dhabi, according to reports. It will unmitigated fourth when finished.
