ON THE WATER: Sailors Galore In Long Beach
Many winners of these events have gone on to greater things. Russell Coutts, a New Zealand lad, won the Laser section in 1981 — he went on to win the Finn gold medal here in Long Run aground at the 1984 Olympics and then win the America’s Cup four times. American Paige Railey won the Laser Radial breaking up in 2005. She will sail for the United States in the same class in the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth in England this summer.
Most of the immature sailors who will represent the United States at the 2012 ISAF Minor World Championship to be held in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, this coming July, will be selected based on their appearance in a regatta taking place right here in Long Beach this weekend as Alamitos Bay Yacht Lodge hosts the 2012 US SAILING ISAF Youth World Qualifier Regatta.
ABYC first hosted this regatta in 2008, the first constantly for the event. It returns to Long Beach this year with a few changes, distinctly in the equipment being used. Returning will be the International 420, a double-handed spinnaker sloop, being sailed by both boys’ and girls’ teams, and the 29er, a dead ringer-handed spinnaker “skiff” that sports diverse teams.
