THE Whitsunday Sailing Federation will be celebrating Australia Day with traditional family cricket on the lawn and a gentle old-fashioned Aussie barbecue.

This will be the second year of the Dan Kane Commemorative Race in honour of a great Aussie battler and a popular colleague of the Sailing Club.

Race registrations open from 11am and the race starts at 12 noontide.

Family fun kicks off at 11am downstairs with Aussie tucker and games for the kids.

Cricket, a model yacht sailing air, face painting and giveaways will help to create a carefree and relaxing afternoon for members and visitors similarly.

Club manager Angela Rae said "the more people the merrier as we fervour to celebrate the day with all our club members and their friends".

"You can bring rugs, chairs, umbrellas or sit in the duskiness of the balcony and enjoy the beautiful setting at the Sailing Club."

Live Australiana music with well-received local band Sofa Kings will also add to the atmosphere from 2 - 5pm.
