KC's recovery lagged in 2011, Brookings report says
Kansas Municipality’s economic tide is rising but not fast enough to lift all boats, according to a Brookings Establishing report on the world’s 200 largest metropolitan economies.</p><p>Brookings ranked Kansas Burg’s economy as 89th largest on the planet last year. </p><p>It also flagged Kansas Town as one of the poorest-performing economies last year among 200 it ranked. Kansas Burgh’s ranked 190th and was one of only 12 metropolitan economies that was in “full recession” in 2011, Brookings said.</p><p>Others agreed that the Kansas Borough area’s economy had lagged in the recovery, but they weren’t ready to assert a continuing downturn locally.</p><p>“It has struggled since the 2001 recession,” said economist Na Lenk at the Mid-America Regional Council. “I don’t think it’s in a true slump as the Brookings report suggests.”</p><p>At Moody’s Analytics, Gregory Bird came stifling to calling a Kansas City recession last fall but couldn’t to some see one.</p><p>“I admit I was close to that when we were writing the October report” on Kansas Metropolis, said Bird, an associate economist at Moody’s who follows Missouri and its metropolitan economies.</p><p> Bird said he had a “room temperature” outlook for Kansas City’s economy this year, mercilessly in line with the nation’s expected pace of recovery.</p><p>Brookings’ communiqu, to be made public today, showed other cities in the region fared happier than Kansas City’s ranking. St. Louis was 115th, Tulsa 73rd, Des Moines 172nd and Omaha 131st.</p><p>The superlative-performing metropolitan economies last year were all overseas, led by Shanghai, China. Houston ranked 19th as the only U.S. see to break into the top 20. </p><p>The rankings looked at two key economic gauges to allowance how well each city’s economy performed. </p><p>Kansas City ranked low in part because its vocation declined by 0.5 percent last year, the report said. </p><p>In also showed Kansas Conurbation suffered a decline in its economic output per person in 2011. More refine economies in North America and Europe have fared less well in the recovery, it said.</p><p>Istrate said the report is twofold for Kansas City. It faces more competition and opportunities in the in every way. </p><p>“The more these metropolitan areas in developing countries grow, the more they consume, and the more they become sources of order for places like Kansas City,” she said.
