Pacific Northwest Boating News: Gay and lesbian yacht club marks ...

The men and women gathered over cocktails and a potluck at a Gig Harbor marina on a latest weekend could have been part of any boating rendezvous on Puget Tone.

But when Seattle’s Olympic Yacht Union started, the price of membership for many was the nightmare of losing their jobs or alienating people and friends. They took asylum in the cooperate, one of the few places they could be plainly gay.

Seattle has changed considerably since then. And 30 years later, the Olympic Yacht Beat is thriving and has grown into what is believed to be the oldest gay and lesbian yacht league together in the territory and the only one in the Pacific Northwest. Launched in 1979, will honour its 30th anniversary Aug. 22 at an annual membership torturous in Refuge Orchard.

“It’s about association, getting together with other gay and lesbian and allied clan and due hanging out,” said Mike Cox, the consortium’s commodore.

Generally a public make-up, Olympic Yacht Staff organizes about 14 events annually, including weeklong cruises, rendezvous, a celebration celebration, Halloween “pumpkin batter” and the intermittent blood upshot. There are study get-togethers, low-key potlucks and dock-based events such as camping.
