In the 10 years' full-lifetime work it took the cabinet-maker and keen sailor to duplicity the 55-tonne wooden ship by hand in his Bushfield back yard, many were express to laugh at his apparent folly.

Mr Wylie, 54, said he never wavered in his creed that he could and would build a ship to sail the world.

The result is a 21m wide, 17m rangy marvel that can cruise at up to seven knots and take spectators back in time. That is no misadventure.

Mr Wylie was inspired by the legendary Mahogany Ship, a Portuguese explorer intelligence shipwrecked in 1522 on the wild coast west of Warrnambool.

But in the face sightings dating back to the 1800s of a ship part-buried in the dunes and a $250,000 prize once posted to prove it existed, the ship remains a mystery.

Mr Wylie brought his question ship to life with just $20,000 and old-fashioned methods. He drafted the design - without a computer - from pictures of the ships worn by pirates and conquerors - Portuguese caravels - fashioning the "acute and shallow- drafted" vessel by salvaging fallen cypress trees off farms and using an bad ironbark for the keel.

Norwegian King Becomes Honorary Wirral Sailing Club Member ...

One of the sailing clubs in England's oldest and most respected, the Supreme Mersey Yacht Nightclub (RMYC), welcomed their latest enlistee, the monarch of Norway. The RMYC greeted His Majesty the crowned head Harald V of Norway, he accepted an existence only as a member.

Founded in 1844, the RMYC counted in the air first Vicar of Sir Robert Peel, among its first members. The brush is currently working with Wirral Task Force on the redevelopment of the oversized coast Sway Ferry to Eastham.
