Sonar requires the echo of his reappear. Whales and schools of fish can be picked up. They are both submerged if the absolute object is available for the returning echo.

In the case of a ship only the husk of the submerged hull is available.

IF someone can counter in $10,000 a year to maintain it, Alan Clarke will give his $60,000 sailing cruiser to Thoroughfare Mission so troubled, homeless or disabled kids can leave their cares behind and splash out a day sailing.

The founder of Street Mission in 1998, Mr Clarke has been using his 10m steel row-boat to take six to 12 youngsters out for a day of sailing about 45 times a year.

Now 64 and on the threshold of retiring, Mr Clarke wants to give his boat, Lauracourt, to Street Function but doesn’t want to lumber the charity with an annual upkeep bill of $10,000.

He hopes someone will commit to pay the costs of maintaining the yacht or that some local tradesmen will volunteer their once upon a time.

The major annual cost is anti-fouling, cleaning and repainting the motor yacht’s hull.

Some of the youngsters who have been on Mr Clarke’s boat have been tangled with StreetWork at Chatswood.

StreetWork team leader Amber Davies said youthful people benefit enormously from their days out sailing.
